How Can You Check Battery Usage by App in Windows 11?

Windows 11 can show which apps contributed to recent battery use. The built-in view sits in Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, where you can read the selected time period, a battery-level chart, and a per-app breakdown.

I reproduced this read-only check on Windows 11 Home Single Language version 25H2, build 26220.7872. I did not change the time period, search or sort the list, open an app menu, adjust background activity, or alter any power setting. The private raw screenshots were cropped and redacted before publication because the full page contains account identity and app-usage history.

What does Battery usage show?

The top of the expanded section shows battery levels for the currently selected period. On the tested laptop, the selector displayed Last 24 hours. The exact chart depends on when the PC was on battery, asleep, charging, or connected to power.

Below the chart, Battery usage per app ranks recent app contribution. Some entries can also separate In use activity from Background activity. Those percentages describe the selected recent window; they do not measure the battery's physical health or remaining full-charge capacity.

How can you open Battery usage in Windows 11?

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select System in the left sidebar.
  3. Select Power & battery.
  4. Find Battery usage, then select its arrow to expand the section.
  5. Read the time-period label before comparing the chart or app list.

How can you read battery usage per app?

  1. Keep the Battery usage section expanded.
  2. Scroll to Battery usage per app.
  3. Start with the current Overall usage order and compare each visible percentage.
  4. Where Windows provides it, compare the In use and Background lines. A large background share means the app used power while it was not the foreground window during the selected period.
  5. Repeat the observation after normal use if the list is empty or the period contains little battery activity.

Do not treat a single high percentage as proof that an app is faulty. A video call, game, browser session, update, or short measurement window can legitimately make one app dominate the recent total.

How should you interpret the percentages?

The list is a comparison within the chosen recent period. An app showing 40% does not mean it consumed 40 percentage points of the battery's total capacity, and it does not mean the battery is 40% worn. It means Windows attributes that share of the recorded app-related use in the displayed window to that entry.

  • In use generally covers activity while you were actively using the app.
  • Background covers supported activity when the app was not the foreground window.
  • Overall usage combines the available contribution for ranking.
  • System services and traditional desktop programs can expose different levels of detail.

What should you do when an app shows high battery usage?

First, compare the result with what you actually did during the displayed period. If the app was open for a long call, video, game, or download, the result may be expected. Close work you no longer need and observe a later period before changing settings.

For supported apps, the three-dot menu can expose Manage background activity. Microsoft notes that limiting background activity can reduce power use, but it can also delay notifications, syncing, and updates. Treat that as a separate configuration decision, not as part of this read-only check. Some traditional desktop apps manage background behavior only inside their own settings.

Why might Battery usage be missing or empty?

A desktop without a battery may not offer the same history. A laptop can also show little or no useful app data after a restart, a recent reset of the relevant history, continuous charging, or a period with almost no battery-powered activity. Hardware, Windows build, and application type can affect which details appear.

Keep the PC in its normal supported state and check again after ordinary use. Avoid installing an unknown monitoring utility just to fill the list, and do not change power plans or background permissions merely to create data for a screenshot.

How do you finish without changing anything?

Close Settings when you have finished reading the chart and list. Expanding the section and scrolling do not change power behavior. In this reproduction, Settings and ShareX were both closed afterward, and no selector, app menu, background permission, power mode, energy saver, screen, sleep, or hibernation setting was changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a high percentage mean an app drained that much of the whole battery?

No. It is a relative share of recorded app use in the selected recent period, not a direct reading of battery-capacity loss.

Can every app show separate background activity?

No. The detail and available management controls depend on the app type and what Windows can measure. Traditional desktop apps often manage background behavior in their own settings.

Why is Battery usage per app empty?

The selected period may contain little battery-powered activity, or the device may have insufficient recent history. Use the PC normally and check again later without changing power settings just to create data.

Does opening Battery usage change a power setting?

No. Opening and reading the page is observational. A change occurs only if you deliberately use a selector or a separate app, background, energy, screen, sleep, or power control.

Compare the right data before acting

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, note the displayed time period, and compare the per-app list with what you actually did during that window. Use the result as a recent activity clue, not as a battery-health diagnosis, and keep management controls untouched unless you have separately decided that their notification, syncing, or performance tradeoffs are acceptable.
