How can I verify if I am using WSL 1 or WSL 2?

It is common for older installations to stay on version 1. To check the version of your installed distributions, run:
wsl --list --verbose
(or
wsl -l -v
) Look at the “Version” column. If it shows “1,” you should upgrade it to take advantage of full system call compatibility and increased file I/O performance.

How do I set WSL 2 as the default for all future installations?

If you plan on installing multiple distributions (like Kali, Debian, or Alpine), you should ensure they always default to version 2. Execute:
wsl --set-default-version 2
This ensures that any new distro downloaded from the Microsoft Store will automatically use the WSL 2 architecture.

How do I convert an existing WSL 1 distribution to WSL 2?

If you already have a Linux environment set up and don’t want to lose your files, you can convert it in-place. Use the following syntax:
wsl --set-version <distro name> 2

What should I do if I get an “Error: 0x80370102” during setup?

This error typically means that Hardware Virtualization is disabled in your computer’s BIOS/UEFI settings. Even if you enable the features in Windows, the CPU must have “Intel VT-x” or “AMD-V” turned on at the firmware level.
Recommendations related to LPD Print Service:

Some formalities are to be considered after enabling the LPD Print Service in Windows 11.

Configuring Firewall Rules:

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1011" height="605" src="https://winsides.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Allow-LPD-Service-through-Firewall.webp" alt="Allow LPD Service through Firewall" class="wp-image-1226" style="width:768px" title="Can I Enable LPD Print Service in Windows 11?
To ensure proper communication, configure your firewall to allow LPD print jobs. Go to
Control Panel
>
System and Security
>
Windows Defender Firewall
>
Allow on App through Firewall
.

Setting up Automatic Startup:

Set up LPD Service Startup to Automatic

LPR Command-Line Tool:

Windows includes the LPR command-line tool for sending print jobs to a network printer that uses LPD. This can be handy for scripting print jobs. The syntax is as follows. lpr -S servername -P printername /printername /servername<servername><printername><filename>
</filename></printername></servername>

Security Considerations:

The LPD protocol was designed at a time when network security was not a primary concern. Therefore, it does not include any built-in mechanisms for authenticating clients or encrypting data, making it susceptible to unauthorized access and eavesdropping.

Although LPD uses port 515 by default, you can configure it to use a different port if needed. This might be useful for security purposes or to avoid conflicts with other services. You can adjust firewall rules and service configurations accordingly.

Use IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) to encrypt print jobs sent over the network. This ensures that sensitive documents are protected during transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to change my Firewall settings for LPD?

LPD typically communicates over TCP Port 515. If your Windows Firewall is set to a strict profile, it might block incoming print jobs. When you enable the feature, Windows usually creates a rule automatically, but you should verify that “LPD Service” is allowed through the “Inbound Rules” in your Windows Defender Firewall settings.

Is LPD the same as standard TCP/IP printing?

Standard TCP/IP printing (usually on port 9100) is the modern “Raw” printing method. LPD is a “Request” based protocol that requires a “Queue Name” to function. If you are setting up a printer and it asks for a “Queue Name” (like
lp
or
PR1
), You are likely using LPD.

Does LPD support bidirectional Communication?

LPD does not support the same level of bidirectional communication as modern protocols. This means you might not get detailed “Low Ink” or “Paper Jam” notifications on your PC compared to using a standard WSD or TCP/IP port.

Take away:

LPD Print Service in Windows 11 is particularly useful for supporting legacy systems that do not have drivers for modern printing protocols. Many older Unix/Linux systems or applications may still rely on LPD, making it a valuable service for maintaining compatibility with these systems.
The Client for NFS (Network File System) in Windows 11 is a feature that allows Windows systems to access files on Unix-based or Linux-based NFS servers as if they were local files. NFS is a network file-sharing protocol commonly used in Unix and Linux environments, enabling impeccable file-sharing and access across different operating systems. Users can map network drives to NFS shares using standard Windows tools, such as File Explorer or the command prompt. This feature is not enabled by default in Windows 11 Professional Editions. This article will walk through how to Enable Client for NFS in Windows 11 using simple steps. Check out: How do I Enable Services for NFS in Windows 11?

While NFS is a common feature in Unix and Linux systems, Windows systems traditionally use different file-sharing protocols, such as SMB (Server Message Block). However, in environments that use both Windows and Unix/Linux systems, Windows users often need to access NFS shares. This is where the Client for NFS comes into play. It is a feature in Windows 11 that allows a Windows system to connect to and access files on an NFS server.

How does NFS Share work?

NFS shares work by creating a transparent and smooth way for computers to share and access files over a network, using a server-client architecture model. By mounting a remote directory onto their local file system, clients can interact with files stored on the NFS server as if they were local, allowing for efficient file sharing and collaboration in networked environments.

Information on the Go!
Client for NFS Feature is not availble in the Home Edition as Microsoft typically reserves certain advanced features for the Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions.

Are there any security risks with enabling NFS?

NFS (specifically older versions like v2 or v3) does not have the robust built-in encryption that modern SMB versions provide. It relies heavily on IP-based authentication. If you are enabling this on a laptop that connects to public Wi-Fi, ensure your firewall is configured to block NFS ports (2049) on public profiles, or only enable the client when you are on a trusted local network.

Should I use NFS instead of SMB if I have a choice?

It depends on your environment. If you are primarily accessing files from a Linux-based NAS or a web server, NFS can offer better performance and lower overhead for small file operations. However, if your environment is entirely Windows-based, SMB (Server Message Block) is generally easier to manage regarding permissions and security integration.

In summary, NFS shares are a key component of file sharing in Unix and Linux systems, and the Client for NFS in Windows 11 enables Windows users for seamless access. This feature is particularly valuable in mixed OS environments, where it fosters better collaboration and efficiency by allowing Windows systems to work smoothly with Unix/Linux servers.

Network File System (NFS) is a distributed file system protocol that allows users to access files over a network as if they were on their local storage. Originating from the UNIX world, NFS facilitates effective file sharing between systems, making it an essential tool for networked environments, especially in mixed-OS settings. It allows Windows 11 systems to interact with NFS shares provided by Unix or Linux Servers. Windows 11 can act as both an NFS client (accessing NFS shares) and an NFS server (hosting NFS shares).
An NFS share is a directory or a folder on a server that has been configured to be accessible over a network using the NFS protocol. NFS was developed by Sun Microsystems and has become a standard protocol for file sharing in UNIX and Linux environments. The protocol allows a system to share directories and files with others over a network, enabling users to access and manage files as if they were on their local machines.

NFS operates on a server-client architecture model, and the process of connecting to an NFS share from a client system is known as mounting. Once mounted, the shared directory appears as a local directory on the client system, allowing users to interact with it using standard file operations. It uses RPC (Remote Procedure Call) to facilitate communication between the client and server. The protocol supports various versions, with NFSv4 being the latest version.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I mount an NFS share once the service is enabled?

Once the client is active, you can map a network drive using the Command Prompt or PowerShell. The syntax is:
mount -o anon \\hostname_or_ip\sharename Z:

Why am I getting “Access Denied” even though the service is running?

This is the most common hurdle. NFS relies on UID (User ID) and GID (Group ID) for permissions, which Windows doesn’t use natively. By default, Windows attempts to access the share as an anonymous user with a UID/GID of -2.
To fix this, you often need to edit the Windows Registry to match the UID and GID of the Linux server.

Can Windows 11 act as an NFS Server?

Standard Windows 11 only includes the Client for NFS. This means you can view files on other NFS systems, but you cannot host an NFS share for others to see. To host an NFS share from a Windows machine, you would typically need Windows Server or third-party software.

Viewing the folder or file size is one of the most common tasks anyone performs when they need to check storage usage. Depending on the situation, there are different ways to view the size of a directory. While you may think there is only one or two methods to show folder sizes, there are actually more than 6 methods available. These methods vary, and some may involve using the Command Prompt, PowerShell, or even third-party apps. In this article, I will provide you with different methods to view folder or directory sizes in File Explorer on Windows 11, as well as other options.

Method 1: Viewing Folder Size by Hovering on it:

This is the simplest way to view the folder size. All you have to do is hover over the folder, and the folder size will be displayed as a tooltip. Refer to the image below for a visual example.

Hovering over the folder will display the size in the ToolTip

Method 2: Finding Folder Size using File Explorer Properties Option:

This is another simple method, similar to the one above. Instead of hovering, you just need to right-click on the folder and choose the Properties option to view the folder size. It will display the directory size under both “Size” and “Size on Disk” options. Alternative you can use the keyboard shortcut <kbd>ALT</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> to launch the properties after choosing the folder/directories.

Method 3: Viewing Folder Size from Details in File Explorer:

This method is similar to the previous one and also relies on the Properties option. First, select the folder or directory, then in the right pane, you will see an option named Details. Click on it, and from there, you can access the Properties option. Once clicked, you can view the folder size in the Properties window.

WinDirStat Logo

WinDirStat is a popular and powerful disk usage statistics viewer. It provides a visual representation of the files and folders on your drive, making it easy to identify which files or directories are taking up the most space. The graphical treemap helps you understand disk space allocation by representing files as colored rectangles based on their size, allowing you to quickly spot large folders and files. It’s a lightweight tool that makes it an excellent option for users who need to analyze disk usage. You can download the app here: https://windirstat.net/

Treesize Free Logo

TreeSize Free is another widely used tool to view folder sizes and disk usage. It provides a hierarchical view of your folder structure, showing sizes in a clear and readable format. You can quickly drill down into subfolders to see where storage is being used the most. It’s highly efficient for scanning drives and directories, even for larger storage volumes. TreeSize Free also allows you to sort and filter results. You can download the app here: https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free

Conclusion:

In conclusion, checking folder or file sizes is an essential task for managing storage on your Windows 11 PC. With the methods mentioned above, from using File Explorer to leveraging Command Prompt, PowerShell, or third-party apps, you now have a variety of tools at your disposal to easily view directory sizes. Whether you prefer a quick hover or more detailed analyses with apps like TreeSize Free or WinDirStat, these methods ensure you can efficiently manage your storage.
AD & AD LDS Services for Client in Windows 11: If you’re managing a network or developing applications and have Windows 11 Enterprise Edition, you might need to enable Active Directory (AD) or Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS). These powerful tools are essential for handling directory services, managing network resources, and keeping everything running smoothly. Active Directory (AD) is the backbone of user and resource management in a Windows network environment. It helps you centrally manage users, groups, and computers.

On the other hand, Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) is a bit different. Think of it as a more streamlined version of AD. It’s designed for applications that need directory features but don’t require the full-blown AD domain infrastructure. This article will walk through the steps to enable Active Directory and Lightweight Directory Services for client on your Windows 11 Enterprise system. Check out: How to Enable Services for NFS in Windows 11?

What are SSI Commands and How do they work?

SSI commands are special directives that you place inside your HTML files to tell the server to perform specific actions. These actions could include inserting the content of another file, displaying the current date and time, executing a script, or displaying environment variables like the server name.

Scenarios:

Let’s say you have a website with a common navigation menu across all your pages. Instead of copying and pasting the same HTML code into every page, you could create a separate file just for the menu. In your
.shtml
pages, you’d include a command to pull in the menu file. When someone visits the page, the server processes the SSI command, inserts the menu, and then sends the completed page to the visitor.

Example:

Sample Code Explaining SSI Execution

In this example, the server replaced the SSI commands with the actual content of the
header.html
and
footer.html
files and the current date and time. These commands are what make SSI so useful for web developers!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my AD LDS installation fail when I try to use the default LDAP port 389?

Port 389 is the globally recognized default port for LDAP traffic. If you try to bind your local AD LDS instance to port 389 on Windows 11 and it fails, it usually means another local service has already claimed it.

How do I actually view or edit the data inside my AD LDS instance once it’s enabled?

Windows 11 will give you the feature, but it won’t give you a fancy database app to look at it. To actually populate your directory with mock users, organizational units (OUs), and security groups, you need to use the native MMC (Microsoft Management Console) snap-ins.

Is an AD LDS directory secure enough to use in a live production environment?

While it shares the same underlying database technology as a full-blown Active Directory, AD LDS on Windows 11 is strictly meant for local staging and application testing. It lacks the massive infrastructure pieces required for enterprise security, such as Kerberos authentication distribution, Group Policy management, and native domain trust relationships.

What is the difference between an AD LDS “Instance” and an AD LDS “Partition”?

The Instance is the actual running Windows service on your computer. It controls the network port bindings and the physical database file on your hard drive. The Partition is a logical slice of data inside that database. You can have one instance running on port 50000, but inside that single instance, you can create multiple naming contexts or partitions (e.g., OU=Finance,DC=Local and OU=Dev,DC=Local) to keep different sets of application data completely separated.

Take away:

URL Authorization in IIS is a security mechanism that determines whether a user or group can access specific URLs or resources on a web application, based on predefined rules. The admin can define these rules. Consider a gatekeeper of an Apartment, how he checks the identity of every visitor entering the apartment, and decides whether to allow them or not depending on the apartment association rules, the same way, URL Authorization uses information like usernames or roles to enforce predefined rules ensuring that only authorized users can view the sensitive pages or files of a web application. This article will navigate the steps of How to Enable URL Authorization for Internet Information Services on Windows 11 using simple yet clear steps.
