Windows 11 can show product suggestions inside the Settings app. The current switch is Recommendations and offers in Settings under Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Turn it Off if you do not want the product recommendations and offers covered by this preference, or On if you want Windows to show them.
I reproduced the setting on Windows 11 Home Single Language version 25H2, build 26220.7872. The real switch started On, changed to Off, and returned to On. Windows UI Automation confirmed every state, the neighboring privacy controls stayed unchanged, and the process required neither administrator approval nor a restart.
What does suggested content in Settings mean?
Microsoft describes this content as suggestions shown throughout Settings. A suggestion can introduce a Windows feature, recommend content, or offer an app or product that Microsoft thinks may be useful. The current Settings description says: Let Windows show me product recommendations and offers in Settings.
This is a display preference for the Settings experience, not a complete advertising or privacy switch. Turning it Off does not remove the Settings app, block Windows Update, uninstall an app, or disable every recommendation elsewhere in Windows.
Table of contents
Where is the suggested-content switch in Windows 11?
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Recommendations & offers.
- Find Recommendations and offers in Settings.
Microsoft's current support page still describes the older wording Show me suggested content in the Settings app and sometimes names the page General. Microsoft also notes that General is being replaced by Recommendations & offers on newer Windows 11 versions. Use the current on-screen description to identify the same preference.

How do you turn suggested content in Settings off?
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers.
- Read the current state beside Recommendations and offers in Settings.
- Set the switch to Off.
- Confirm that Off appears beside the control. You do not need to restart Windows.

On the reproduced PC, the UI Automation TogglePattern changed to Off immediately. That result applies only to the product recommendations and offers governed by this row. The other switches on the page kept their previous values.
How do you turn suggested content in Settings on?
- Return to Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers.
- Set Recommendations and offers in Settings to On.
- Confirm that On appears beside the switch.
Enabling the setting permits the covered recommendations to appear when Windows has something to show. It does not guarantee that a suggestion appears immediately. During rollback, the reproduced control returned to On without a restart.
How is this different from nearby recommendation controls?
- Personalized offers controls tips, ads, and recommendations personalized from Windows activity and device information.
- Show notifications in Settings controls optional notifications shown within Settings; Windows says required notifications can still appear when that switch is Off.
- Improve Start and search results controls whether app launches help personalize Start and device search.
- Advertising ID controls app access to the Windows advertising identifier.
- Allow websites to access my language list controls a language preference signal shared through Windows.
These rows are independent. Changing Recommendations and offers in Settings did not change any neighboring switch during the reproduced test.
What does turning suggested content off not change?
- Windows and Settings continue to work. The preference does not disable system configuration pages.
- Windows Update and security notices remain available. Important operating-system messages use their own mechanisms.
- Start recommendations are separate. Controls under Personalization > Start govern the Start menu.
- App notifications are separate. Manage them under System > Notifications.
- Ads outside Settings are not universally blocked. Apps, websites, and Microsoft account services can use separate preferences.
How do you restore the original setting?
Before testing, note whether the switch says On or Off. Return to the same Recommendations & offers page, set the control back to that value, and read the label beside it. The reproduced PC started On, changed to Off, and was restored to On. An independent UI Automation check confirmed the final On state.
What can you do if the switch is missing or unavailable?
- Install current Windows updates, then reopen Privacy & security.
- Look for either Recommendations & offers or the older General page name.
- Search Settings for suggested content or recommendations and offers.
- If the control is unavailable, check whether a work or school organization manages the PC.
- Use the supported Settings switch instead of importing an unverified Registry file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off suggested content remove every ad in Windows 11?
No. This preference controls product recommendations and offers inside Settings. Apps, websites, and other Windows surfaces use separate controls.
Is suggested content the same as Personalized offers?
No. They are neighboring but separate switches. Personalized offers uses activity and device information for tailored experiences, while this row governs product recommendations and offers in Settings.
Do you need to restart after changing the setting?
No. The reproduced control changed immediately from On to Off and returned to On without a restart.
Why does Microsoft documentation say General or Show me suggested content?
Microsoft says General is being replaced by Recommendations & offers in newer Windows 11 versions. The current row is named Recommendations and offers in Settings and carries the product-recommendations description.
Control product suggestions without changing unrelated settings
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and change Recommendations and offers in Settings. Off prevents the product recommendations and offers covered by this preference; On allows them. Record the starting value first and leave the neighboring privacy controls unchanged unless you intend to configure them separately.
